5 Ways to Boost Your Mood Naturally

Do you remember that episode of Sex and The City where Carrie escapes from the rain into the coffee shop and sits next to the older woman who sprinkles lithium on top of her ice cream to boost her mood? We all need a little pick me up every now and then like that woman, right? I laugh every time I watch it. Then think—how do we boost our mood mid-day without reaching for the ice cream (and drugs obvi) Here are a few things to boost your mood naturally instead.

  1. Diffuse uplifting essential oils. My favorite energizing blend is lemon, eucalyptus and spearmint. I turn it on as soon as I enter my living room in the morning. It’s the perfect blend for setting a refreshing and energizing tone to the day.

  2. Meditate. Meditate. Meditate. Meditation is a practice. I won’t lie— and can be tough to get started. I recommend starting with an app— my favorite is Headspace. Learning to sit with your breath, and let your thoughts come and go helps you control them throughout the day. Starting the day with meditation helps make decisions easier throughout the day, reduces stress and encourages mindfulness.

  3. Move. Exercise releases endorphins, endorphins make you happy people, happy people don’t kill their husbands. Elle Woods was damn right. Starting the day with movement lifts my mood instantly. It’s like— if you can commit yourself to a workout early in the AM you can commit to anything throughout the day.

  4. Light. Open the blinds. It wound so simple, but is so effective. Most people don’t open their blinds at all throughout the day. Letting sunlight in enhances the body’s supply of endorphins, therefore elevating your mood.

  5. Diet. I find this to be most important. When you’re in a slump, it’s easy to resort to shitty food, booze and binge eating. Adding dark leafy greens, bright colors on to your plate will help you move with ease. Leafy greens contain magnesium and potassium which feel more radiant and add energy to your body throughout the day.

Try adding these things to your day one at a time. You’ll be surprised at how great they make you feel.
